Tim Cook’s China Visit Focuses on AI Rollout

Apple CEO Tim Cook is currently in China, addressing critical supply chain issues and navigating the country’s regulatory environment. His visit, which began on November 26, 2024, also focuses on bringing Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI-driven large language models (LLMs), to Chinese consumers. However, Apple faces complex approval processes due to China’s strict oversight on foreign tech.

Cook’s visit comes as Apple works through the hurdles of complying with Chinese regulations. According to a source at the Cyberspace Administration of China, Apple would need to undergo a rigorous approval process to use its own AI technology. However, the approval process would be more straightforward if Apple chooses to collaborate with Chinese firms or use AI models already vetted by the government.

Reports suggest that Apple is in ongoing talks with major Chinese firms such as Baidu, ByteDance, and Moonshot to ensure the successful launch of Apple Intelligence in the country. Apple has not publicly confirmed the details of these negotiations, but Cook had previously mentioned the company’s efforts in October 2024, emphasizing the importance of completing the regulatory process. This visit marks Cook’s third trip to China in 2024, highlighting Apple’s commitment to expanding its presence in one of its most important markets.
