Apple is about to make a significant leap with its iPhone SE lineup. According to Barclays analysts, the long-rumored fourth-generation iPhone SE is confirmed to launch in March 2024. This new model is expected to feature Apple’s own 5G modem, a major step towards reducing its reliance on Qualcomm.

The iPhone SE 4 is said to closely resemble the iPhone 14 in design, with a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, and a newer A-series chip. The single rear camera will boast a 48-megapixel sensor, making it a compelling option for photography enthusiasts. Rumors also suggest a shift to a USB-C port, aligning with Apple’s broader transition across its product ecosystem. Notably, the iPhone SE 4 will pack 8GB of RAM, which could enhance its performance and Apple Intelligence capabilities.

What’s really grabbing attention is the inclusion of Apple’s own 5G modem. Apple has been working on this modem since 2018, and the SE 4 will likely be the first iPhone to feature it. While it’s still unclear whether this will translate to faster speeds or improved connectivity, the move is a significant milestone for Apple, which has long been reliant on Qualcomm for modem technology.

Apple’s move to develop its own 5G modem is part of a broader strategy to become less dependent on third-party suppliers. The company previously acquired Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019, solidifying its path towards a fully in-house solution. While the new SE model might come with a price increase from its $429 predecessor, the iPhone SE 4 promises to be an exciting option for budget-conscious users looking for powerful tech.
